So True

I was having a conversation about wedding trends with a friend today. I was telling her about how my love for mason jars has dwindled since I have seen it all over crazy blog land. OK, so my love of mason jars is still going strong but sometimes I wish it hadn't become SO popular. I will still use the gazillion jars I inherited from A Desert Fete (THANK YOU!).

Then I realized that I have actually never been to a wedding where mason jars were used or where there was a photobooth and I have never heard of any of my friends or family members going to such a wedding so even if mason jars are not new to me they will be new to most of my guests.

Of course, Rock 'n Roll bride , who knows all, posted about this very same topic today! She made a very valid point - "Your wedding guests won’t have been scoring the internet looking for wedding ideas for the last year so will have no idea if something has ‘been done’ or not!" So who cares if that wedding blog you check every day is so over cupcakes, that doesn't mean you can't still have the biggest f*in cupcake tower you could ever imagine at your own wedding.

On a side note, as good a laugh as I got when I first discovered those "tacky wedding" sites, I have to say that if I am supposed to be all about promoting atypical and unique weddings that showcase a couple's individual style and personality then I can't knock a full out camo or S & M clown theme wedding, ya know? More power to them for not giving into the norm and for doing their own thing.

I totally agree! I keep hearing about candy buffet's at weddings, but I've never actually SEEN a candy buffet at a wedding.

I kinda want to though!

As an American living in South Africa I am almost guaranteed that I won't see any of the trendy touches at any of the weddings here, so I feel I can get away with any of them and still be unique. But on that note I'm also adament that I thought about a lot of these ideas before I read about them online. There are a lot of like minded people out there so similar concepts are bound to collide on the world wide web. Besides, unless your copying someone else's wedding colour for colour, flower by flower, your wedding will most likey have elements from a variety of inspirations, thereby making your event unique in itself!!

This is such a good point... the stuff we see again and again online would still be completely fresh and original to most people actually attending your wedding.

That would be especially true of my extended family, who until our wedding hadn't seen one since some weird cousin got married in the early '90s. So we were VERY fresh to them. ;-)

I totally agree. But I can't help but want to be different. Which I will be because we are all different!

I came across your site through a chain of other wedding blogs and found comfort and humor in this post. When I first began planning my wedding, about two months ago, I thought I was sooo original for wanting to get married in a barn decorated by mason jars, candles and paper lanterns. Then I started looking at wedding blogs. Oops.

very well said! we see this stuff over & over again but all or at least the majority of these things will be novel to our guests.
