Engagement Party 101

I'm a little confused about the proper etiquette on this one. I always thought it was in poor taste to throw yourself an engagement party. Isn't that what families and friends are for? To throw endless events in your honor? Just kidding. Anyway, I really want a party. I don't care about presents. I just want to have a party. For us. Do I throw it myself if no one else is going to do it (families and friends are 3000 miles away for the most part)?

Did you have an engagement party?
Who threw it for you?

i'm still in the not engaged camp, but i feel like the likelihood of someone throwing us an engagement party is slim. i'd be perfectly fine rounding up a huge amount of friends to celebrate at a bar - plus this way all my friends who won't be invited to the wedding can still get to be a part of the celebrating.

I'm not engaged (yet) - so I don't have a true opinion; but, I've been to engagement parties thrown by the parents of the bride or groom (which my mom always says is so old fashioned?!) but also, I've had multiple friends who have "thrown" themselves one - usually just a "hey, we'll be at so-and-so restaurant/bar at this time - come stop by and say hey!" I don't think it's totally absurd to throw yourselves one...but that's just me. :)

I don't see anything wrong with throwing your own party. Wouldn't it just be like saying "HEY!! I'm turning 21!! Come over and we're gonna have great food and awesome drinks!"

Same thing to me. Why wouldn't you want to celebrate the special occasion with all your friends? I think that sounds good!

We threw our own engagement party. But I understood that the couple could throw their own engagment party ... maybe I was wrong in that understanding? Oh well, that's what we did!

We asked for "best wishes only" to not get gifts, and we provided lots of food and drinks in our home. Nothing swanky - just our house, some pretty valentine's decorations (it was the week-end after valentine's day, 2008) and lots of good conversations!

I think if you are going to have a full-on engagement event then it's best if someone else throws it for you or it might be a little strange. If you're looking for a more casual time, I think taking the initiative and going out to celebrate is a great idea!

we were unofficially engaged for about 6 months or so before we were officially engaged... and no one threw us a party. Honestly, I am still pretty bummed about it. If I could do it all over again I would have thrown one for us myself. It totally would have been worth it. (And for the record, i don't regret most things. I didn't go to my senior prom and do I regret it? not at all. but not having an engagement party, for whatever reason, has gotten to me :( )

We threw our own one and no-one bought us gifts. Just bought us drinks so I was trashed at the end of it. But it was amazing fun. We don't live near either of our parents so it made no sense for them to throw us one. I say if you want to celebrate it, then just go ahead and throw one, it's a fabulous excuse for a party!

We totally threw ourselves an engagement party / summer bbq and it was so much fun! People know us well enough to know that presents were not required. It was casual and relaxed!

we threw ours in our backyard and it was perfect. no one thought it was weird that we had our own party and we were extremely explicit about the no presents rule. but we did end up with a closet full of champagne, and i'm not sorry about that.

traditions are made to be reinvented.
