Holiday Weddings - Yay or Nay

We live on the opposite coast as our families and most of our friends so there are very few opportunities to see our loved ones. It was important to us to have our wedding on a three day weekend in order to have more time with everyone. Since I want to start grad school next year (leaving Labor Day weekend out) the three day holiday we decided on was the 4th of July. I was pretty excited about it. We could have sparklers and a BBQ. Plus the 4th falls on a Sunday so most people would get Monday off. Then I read this. Granted this person is a total a-hole but would you resent a couple who had their wedding on a holiday weekend? I mean it's not Christmas, people! We're not doing it to save money (I didn't even think of that); we're doing it to have more time with our friends and family. What do you think - yay or nay?

Oh goodness, that guy really has a bee in his bonnet! I don't know what that site is about (didn't have the time to check it out and have never seen it) but I think his arguement was ridiculous, mean-spirited, petty and selfish.
A 4th July wedding sounds great fun - how great to get to enjoy sparklers and a bbq! I really wouldn't bother with that article - it sounds like he'd have hated it whenever and wherever the wedding had been held.
I wouldn't have a problem with going to a wedding on a holiday weekend as those are the best weekends - you get an extra day! Stick to your plans - the people who matter will be more than happy to be there, holiday weekend or not.

I vote yay.
I understand trying to get people together, so that you can see everyone at once. That's why we're having our wedding the weekend before we start back to school, so that all of our out of state friends will already be in town.
Will there be extra traffic? Yes.
Will they maybe have to pay more for a hotel room? Yes.
Will it be worth it to them and you to all be together to celebrate the day? Yes.
It seems like you aren't doing this to save yourself money or for any real reasons other than to make it easier for everyone to get together and actually make the trip to a far-away destination for your wedding.
For you guys, it seems like the benefits, people actually getting to come, outweigh the cons, maybe spending a little extra money.

Yes for holidays, as long as you do it respectfully (which I have no doubt that you would). We're getting married on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend - like you, our friends and family are scattered all over, so a long weekend is the best way to not inconvenience anyone with taking time off work. Our wedding is also in a fairly remote location, so having an extra day really means something to folks who can't take time off right now. The key, I think, is notification: We gave LOTS of notice. Our first Save the Dates went out in early fall, so everyone had plenty of time to put it on their calendars, arrange their travel, and go through the year knowing that their Memorial Day weekend will be spent with us. We've actually had more people tell us they love the plan than anything - it's a better way for them to spend REAL time with us celebrating our wedding. And really, isn't that what we all want?

Um... maybe for the rest of your wedding planning, you shouldn't read blogs like that... You do what's best for you, your fiance, and your immediate family. I think a big BBQ sparklers wedding sounds like a blast! I also vote yay.

Yes, totally! As long as people have advance notice, and it's not a major family-time holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving. My brother got married Memorial Day weekend, which was great because it gave everyone who'd traveled so far extra time to be with him and his new wife. I've been to New Year's Eve weddings, too - what a great way to ring in the New Year! Go for it!

I say go for it... one of the best weddings I've been to was over the 4th of July. I loved the fact that we could spend some time at the destination with our friends, and not have to pack-up early the day after the wedding. The wedding was Saturday night and we got to stay until Monday. We all went to the lake and hung out - it was super fun! It will definitely be worth it if you can have more of your guests attend!

ew, that man is annoying. Yay for a holdiay wedding. And like you said,, it isn't like it is christmas. The sparklers would be great and just imagine driving off and seeing fireworks and pretending they were for you! fun fun!

I think its a great idea! And, everyone loves a party on July 4th. We got married the Sunday of Labor Day weekend last year and we made a 3-day weekend out of it. Everyone came and had a great time!!!

I was worried about that as well. I'm getting married on Labor Day weekend in NYC and I thought that nobody would want to come. Much to my surprise people who were on my definite no way in hell list are writing and calling to say that they wouldn't miss it for the world. Shocker!

I say just go for it. It's not like you're going to ruin anyones holiday or anything. Weddings are a celebration so who wouldn't want a fabulous party to go to over the holiday, right?

That guy sounds seriously cranky. I'm sure some people will feel inconvenienced by holiday weddings, but you've ultimately got to do what works for you, your partner, and your loved ones.

Our wedding is the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend, and I know we will lose some guests because of it. Ultimately, though, I am so excited to have most of our loved ones with us as we celebrate, and to be thankful with and for them.

Also, the sparklers! Awesome!
